Hayase Nagatoro (長瀞 早瀬, Nagatoro Hayase) is one of the two main characters of the Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro manga series. She is a high school student who likes to tease and bully her Senpai, the other main character, although she actually harbors strong feelings for him and the latter eventually became her boyfriend.[4] Nagatoro is an energetic, athletic, popular, and rather sadistic - but deep down very sweet - girl, often referred to as a "sadodere".[5] She is part of a "cool kids" clique together with her friends Gamo-chan, Yoshi and Sakura, and is a member of the swimming club,[6] despite also having a huge passion for martial arts[7] such as muay thai, boxing, capoeira[8] and especially judo[9] which eventually lead her to join the judo club as well.[10]

Her friends affectionately call her with the pet name "Hayacchi" (はやっち, Hayatchi).[11]

Appearance

Nagatoro is an attractive, petite, and short-statured high schooler with long, straight black hair pinned to the right side with a pair of white hair clips. She has brown skin with noticeable - though sometimes inconsistent - tan lines in the shape of her swimsuit, and large, expressive amber-maroon eyes. She has a metallic piercing on her upper right ear and both of her lobes are pierced, despite this she rarely wears earrings.[12] Compared to other characters, she is exceptionally small, although it has been hinted that she may have a late growth spurt[13] and she actually grew several inches during winter.[14] Nagatoro has a lean, athletic, slender and very flexible[15] physique with a modest bust size which she is often ashamed about despite being - considering her size and build - pretty average sized;[16] also she seemingly gained a bra cup as the story progressed.[17] Nagatoro is rarely seen without a sadistic, cocky, smirk that often displays her very prominent canines[18] and has the tendency to widen the pupil of just an eye whenever she grins.[19]

She typically wears her school uniform consisting of a white button-up shirt (whose sleeves and collar she never keeps buttoned) and a navy blue skirt completed with a pair of sneakers and no socks. However, in summer she wears a short-sleeved shirt in her uniform,[20] while in winter she is shown to wear a light brown sweater,[21] black thigh-high stockings,[22] loafers[23] and occasionally a blue blazer.[24] She is also often seen wearing the light blue and white swimsuit of her club and her judogi.

When not at school she usually sports a simple, practical, or tomboyish choice of clothing[25][26][27] unlike most of her friends; however, she has proven to know how to relatively dress up if needed.[28]

Nagatoro comes off as an energetic, cheerful, sarcastic, flirtatious, prone to fast-talking, and moving individual with a sadistic streak. She likes to bully Senpai and finds joy in teasing him, however, although she appears to just want to torture him, there seems more to it than that. In early chapters her antics could easily be described as "sadistic", frequently making Senpai cry,[29][30] but she soon begins to develop feelings for the boy, and even apologized for "doing messed up stuff" to him, and asked him why he didn't stand up to her.[31] Since then her bullying has mellowed out, and she even frequently acts outwardly friendly to Senpai, despite continuing to call him a "creep". As time passes, she occasionally defends Senpai's dignity[32] and is even shown to be very concerned about Senpai getting angry at her as well as being sincerely sorry for going too far.[33]

Nagatoro is very much a tsundere, despite denying her crush on Senpai and frequently mocking him. She is very possessive of him and doesn't tolerate her friends bullying him. Despite frequently belittling him, she does care greatly for Senpai, being quite bothered when he says that "all he can do is draw" and getting motivated/angered enough by his lack of self-confidence to begin personally training him.[34] She also enjoys Senpai's company very much, but rarely outwardly shows it. Albeit when she invited him to the beach or her house, she shows her intentions to enjoy it and wants to "do it again sometime".[35][36] However she reacts extremely flustered and nervous whenever he does the same, for example, her face wearing an expression of extreme shock when Senpai joked about failing a grade to spend more time with her, although she was angry when he did not fail, saying "Do you hate spending time with me that much..?".[37]

She is very good friends with Yoshi, Sakura, and especially Gamo-chan, who could be considered her best friend, despite their similar and often competitive personalities sometimes putting them at odds in a sort of friendly rivalry.[38][39][40][41] Also, Gamo-chan loves to tease her in order to make Nagatoro admit her feelings for Senpai and bring them closer, causing pranks that sometimes led the two to resort to near-physical violence,[42] despite that they seemingly always made peace rather quickly every time they fight.[43][44] Moreover, judging by their friends' reactions whenever Nagatoro and Gamo-chan butt heads, it's not wise to make them mad, implying that they both have a temper warranting fear. Nevertheless, the two girls genuinely loves one another and, under their harsh personalities, are very supportive and caring to each other.[45]

Although very popular among boys, with several of them often attempting to hit on her or her friends, she always rejects them and shows herself to be quite standoffish while talking to them.[46][47] Her occasional coyness seems to be for Senpai alone. It's implied that Nagatoro uses casual rudeness towards Senpai in order to deflect her real intentions, taking three steps in with her suggestions ("let's wear matching yukatas for next year's festival"), and two steps out with her teasing ("I'm joking, that would be gross"),[48] inching herself gradually closer to him, thus defusing the situation for the moment while leaving a kernel of hope for Senpai.

It's also shown that Nagatoro is a sweeter and more empathetic person than she lets on and that she's more susceptible to Senpai's kindness than he realizes, even tenderly hinting to him - when he gives her his mail contact, all while telling her that he's not a person worth talking to - that his declarations of self-deprecation affect her too.[49] Also, she has a deep sensitivity toward the arts, whether it be movies, paintings, dance, poetry, or music. She seems to genuinely enjoy Senpai's art, frequently encouraging him to draw more and forcing him to use her as a model for his art.[50][51] Although, whether or not it's to train him to draw the female body, get him to draw her specifically, or is just an excuse to spend time and tease him more, is unknown. Nagatoro herself also occasionally draws.[52]

Despite very frequently making sexual jokes to Senpai, mocking him for being a virgin and calling him a pervert, she is very nervous and sensitive about sexuality. For example: when Senpai was giving her a piggy back ride and his hand slipped to her upper thigh, she proceeded to jump off and ran away with minimal explanation and a nervous and terrified expression on her face,[53] when Senpai meant to push her in the elbow and instead hit her breasts, she was very outwardly shocked and embarrassed for a couple of seconds,[54] she had no problem in riding senpai like a horse for "muscle training" until when two unnamed girls saw it, making her very self-aware and causing her to immediately jump off,[55] when she accidentally facetimed Senpai in the bath, she screamed in terror,[56] when she and Senpai were trapped under a gazebo during the rain and he saw her drenched clothes and bra, she instantly blushed in frustration,[57] almost all those times, however, Nagatoro recovered after a couple of seconds and started again to accuse Senpai of grossness and sexual perversion, although he eventually realized that Nagatoro would be at a loss if he actually responded to her taunts romantically, and that Nagatoro is all bark and no bite, especially due to the fact that she can get as embarrassed as he does.[58][59] The hypocritical humor of Nagatoro constantly teasing Senpai about being a virgin is that she's obviously as inexperienced with physical intimacy with the opposite sex as he is.

Nagatoro has a complex for her bust size[60][61] and appears to be very self-conscious as well as jealous and possessive. In the beach chapters, when Gamo-chan and Yoshi were harassing Senpai with their large boobs, Nagatoro gets frustrated, took off her clothes as well, stood in a bikini in front of him, and demands Senpai to go buy drinks.[62] She also was mortified when learning of Gamo-chan's prank to have Senpai "molest" her boobs - due to her jealousy since she is the least buxom among her friends - but nervously laughed it off as a hilarious prank upon learning that she had stuffed anpan in her breasts and Senpai never actually touched them.[63] It also appears her teasing is somewhat just a front, a coping mechanism to mask her insecurities and inner nervousness.

She is also very athletic, loves the beach, is a fantastic swimmer and a superb skier[64] as well as having a huge passion and proficiency in various styles of martial arts; she shows her willingness to train Senpai after his poor performance at a marathon and easily outpaces him during their training run.[65]

Apparently, Nagatoro doesn't like shoes, as she rarely wears socks[66] and is frequently barefoot when she can get away with it.

  • While first explaining how to write her name, Nagatoro said the first kanji means "long" (長, naga) while the second, (瀞, toro), is actually pretty uncommon and doesn't have a proper translation.[67]
    • Her first name, Hayase (早瀬, Hayase) was revealed to the readers (and Senpai) in Chapter 62 by her sister.[68] It means "waterfall" and it's composed of the kanji for "already, now" (早, haya) and "shallows" (瀬, se).
    • Her nickname is a slang contraction, written in hiragana, of "Hayase-chan" (はやせちゃん, Hayase-chan) which becomes "Hayase-chan" (はやせちゃん, Hayase-chan) and thus "Hayacchi" (はやっち, Hayatchi). It could be roughly translated as "little Haya".
  • Although Nagatoro is noticeably darker than most other characters, it is implied to be just a tan from her swimming club activities, as evidenced by tan lines in the shape of her swimsuit.
  • It's implied by the initial chapter's extras that Nagatoro may have ended up bullying Senpai unintentionally to begin with, as she wonders whether she came off too strong and brusque against him from being overexcited.
    • This also implied that she approached Senpai with the intention of being flirtatious but she went overboard and that she has liked him since the beginning of the story.
  • She's sometimes drawn with noodly arms when she gets playful with Senpai, turning into what fans call "Noodletoro".
  • Not knowing their respective names in the first two chapters Senpai only referred to Nagatoro as "that girl" or "kōhai" (meaning "junior", the opposite of "senpai"). Later, she formally introduced to Senpai in Chapter 3 telling him her surname and saying she doesn't care about knowing his real name, as she was fine with calling him just "senpai". Since then, the protagonists began to refer to one another as "Nagatoro" and "Senpai" respectively.
    • However, since in Side Story 5 (chronologically placed before Chapter 35) she read Senpai's midterm test, which had his name written on it, it could be assumed Nagatoro knew his real name as of that moment or maybe even prior to it.
    • On the other hand, Nagatoro's friends constantly called her "Hayacchi" in front of Senpai, with the first time being Chapter 11, suggesting he found out her first name on that occasion.
      • Despite this, in Chapter 58 Senpai seems oblivious to Nagatoro's first name and eventually found it out only in Chapter 62.
  • She is a fan of horror movies, especially with vampires.[69]
  • After having dreamed of her in a cat-like form in Chapter 9, Senpai started to associate Nagatoro to a cat in his subconscious, even going so far as to assume out of nowhere that she actually has a pet cat, which in Chapter 18 is revealed not to be the case.
    • The cat-version of Nagatoro, originally dubbed Nekotoro (猫瀞, Nekotoro), was then drawn by Senpai in Chapter 14 and on the said basis a costume was made on Chapter 36 during the "Culture Festival Arc", being officially re-named Toro-Cat (トロキャット, Torokyatto) in Chapter 44.
  • Nagatoro usually doesn't play video games and is quite poor at them.[70]
  • Both Nagatoro and Gamo-chan share a love for Marlowe pudding, and apparently is often the prize for the many bets and competitions that their friendly rivalry is composed of.[71]
  • Nagatoro likes pollack roe and spicy food,[72] a flavor that she loves on any kind of food, including ice cream.[73] Also, her favourite dishes at the sushi restaurants are negitoro maki[74] and maguro nigiri,[75] while her favourite snacks are koshian and the one she dislikes is tsubuan.[76] She also has a passion for tomato juice, being her typical drink of choice.[77][78][79]
    • Despite that she once stated she dislikes yakisoba[80] apparently, after she helped her club to organize a yakisoba stand for the Cultural Festival as they did every year due to a 20 years tradition[81] she started to like it, joking about buying 100 takoyaki and 100 yakisoba to bring them home and freeze them in order to eat them every day.[82]
    • According to her character profile in the Official Fanbook, her top favorite foods are tomato juice, pudding, curry, and ramen while the food she hates the most is umeboshi.
  • As surprisingly revealed in Chapter 35, Nagatoro is rather competent academically for a girl who procrastinates as much as she does.
  • Nagatoro seems to have a liking for cooking,[83][84] however her actual cooking skills are debatable[85] and she is often mocked by her peers for "playing with food" or ruining it due to her weird tastes.[86][87]

  • Being born on April 1, Nagatoro is the youngest among the girls' clique, as well as the youngest of all the main characters, and the youngest student in her entire batch. In fact, her birthday is the cutoff date for determining a student's year level in Japan (those born between April 2 to April 1 of the next year are put in the same year). Since the Japanese school year is from April to March, and first-year students are required to be 15 years old at the start of classes, she is 15 throughout her entire first year, unlike her friends who all turn 16 sometime during the school year,[1][90][91] later turning 16 in between Chapter 81 and Chapter 82, since the new school year has started by then.

  • On June 10, 2022, during an interview with The Natural Aristocrat, voice actress Kimberley Anne Campbell commented on her audition for Hayase Nagatoro: "I watched the first two episodes before recording the audition. I actually then recorded something for my audition and then sat on it for a few hours. I felt, 'Wait, wait, I can do better than that! I need to actually be mean, I need to have this bite. It has to actually hurt.' I then redid my audition and it felt right. This is it! I sent it off and then a week later, I got the email saying that I’d been cast. Hayase Nagatoro was a really fun, unique, and different experience from the roles I usually play."[92]
