"A picture that will draw in a crowd isn't some "practice" sketch, it's "art". And what is the most important thing in creating a piece of art? [...] It's love!" ― The President to Senpai[source]

Sana Sunomiya (須ノ宮 さな, Sunomiya Sana)[2][3][4] is a supporting character of the Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro manga series. She is a high school - later university - student who served as the "President" (部長, Buchō) of the art club whom Senpai is a member of. The President is a serious, stern, and responsible girl, albeit with a habit of public nudity. Despite being semi-retired due to attending a cram school for art university entrance, she still manages the club's bureaucracy and logistics, eventually becoming enraged and starting a sort of feud with Gamo-chan, Yoshi, Sakura, and especially Nagatoro after they turned the club room into their hangout, although she recognizes the younger girl's role as Senpai's muse, thus becoming a supporter of their relationship. Later in the story, she graduates[5] and starts attending Tokyo University of the Arts.[6]

Appearance

The President is a beautiful, shapely, and very tall young woman with long, straight, dark purplish-black hair that reaches the end of her back (and that she occasionally keeps tied up in a ponytail[7] or a chignon[8]) and a jagged fringe. She has a royal pallor alike, delicate-looking, fair skin - depicted as so clear that seems to glow in the dark[9] - and sharp, cold-looking crimson eyes.[10][11] In terms of height she towers over every other female character of the series, as well as most males, and has a Junoesque, imposing, and athletic[12] physique which has been described as "unreal",[13] with a firm butt, massive boobs, a thin waist, long legs, and slender arms. Having practiced kendo since early childhood, she's also very muscular and toned.[14] Her breasts are her most distinctive feature, and they are often exaggerated for comedic effect.[15][16] The President is rarely seen smiling[17][18] or smirking[19] and sports an intimidating frown or scowl most of the time.

When she was a high schooler, she typically wore her school uniform consisting of a white button-up shirt (whose sleeves and collar she always kept fully buttoned), a red knot tie, and a long navy blue skirt completed with tights and a pair of sneakers. However, in winter she was shown to wear a light brown sweater and occasionally a blue blazer.[20]

When not at school, and after starting to attend university, she was primarily shown wearing traditional Japanese clothing[21] or extremely skimpy Chinese-style ones[22][23] as well as a leather catsuit;[24] however she always prefers being completely naked[25][26][27] and seemingly doesn't wear any underwear.

Personality

The President scolds Senpai

The President scolds Senpai.

The President is a stoic, stern, no-nonsense, dutiful, and brooding individual. She treats everything seriously while everyone else is flustered, intimidated, or else taking it more lightly, which makes it extremely difficult to realize whether or not she was joking, if ever.[28] Also, she's usually very dramatic, especially when she's fired up about art, over which she's quite passionate, proving to have a true artist's soul and following a life philosophy according to which the secret to creating an authentic piece of art is love.[29] She comes off as a mentor figure and a source of inspiration and encouragement for Senpai,[30] albeit intimidating, authoritarian, and disciplinarian to the point he describes her as "a bit scary".[31] The President also tends to be judgmental, describing Nagatoro and her clique as "a bunch of good-for-nothings"[32] without really knowing them and assuming their presence made Senpai unproductive (which is a rough and false assumption); this is the main reason for the animosity between her and the girls who, despite what she wrongly assumed about them, always manage to defeat her.[33][34]

The President is also absolutely shameless or at least extremely nonchalant about the nude human form, particularly her own. This is expressed through her art and through exhibiting noticeable nudist tendencies often throughout the series, showing no embarrassment at anyone seeing her nude, regardless of who they are. As revealed in the Official Fanbook, she does really like to be naked whenever she can get away with it and is later confirmed to also be a streaker, with a habit of running around school naked late at night, eventually creating the legend of Kazehaya High School's "Ghost of the Pale Woman" (白い女の霊, Shiroi on'na no rei).[9]

The President don't make any attempt to cover her nudity in front of Senpai and Nagatoro

The President doesn't make any attempt to cover her nudity in front of Senpai and Nagatoro.

Although she dresses conservatively in a school uniform with a much longer skirt than Nagatoro, Gamo-chan, Yoshi or Sakura, she never wears any underwear,[35] has no qualms about talking to Senpai while wearing just a towel,[36] taking off everything in front of him while being indifferent to his unease,[37] doing fully nude self-portrait from the back[38] and from the front[39] on each Culture Festival, modeling for Senpai in just a swimsuit (implying she wore less in the past for her club members),[40] running a school marathon in a skimpy playboy bunny suit,[41] making no attempt to cover herself after being caught naked by Nagatoro and Senpai in the woods - declaring the wind blew away her robe while she was taking reference photos - and treating the situation very matter-of-factly as she was on her way to just hike down in the buff.[42] She also once advised Senpai to "free himself" and seek inspiration in the outdoors, as she always did, prompting him to imagine her dancing naked into the woods.[43] The President considers her body a powerful tool to convey the sense of artistic pursuit in a holistic manner,[44] but seems largely unaware of how truly stunning she is or the effect she has on people as she behaves in a largely asexual manner despite exuding sexiness in every inch of her artwork. Regardless of this, she once used her charm and intimidating aura to fake a lesbian interest for Nagatoro in order to make her uncomfortable.[45]

The President willingly wears her bunny suit

The President willingly wears her bunny suit.

It was also slightly hinted that she finds pleasure in humiliation, since after Nagatoro's clique forced her to wear a playboy bunny suit after she lost against them at the Culture Festival and paraded her through the school, she stated to have found it embarrassing but that the oppressive feeling was an experience that made her creativity burst forth as if she was about to "unleash something yet unseen before",[46] prompting her to start to wear said costume willingly.[47]

In spite of her intimidating aura, she and Nagatoro can inadvertently get into the same goofy situations much to Senpai's discomfort,[48] also she might have a certain level of hidden feelings for the boy,[49][50] greatly respecting him as a fellow artist and, recognizing Nagatoro as his muse, being more than willing to support the relationship between them as she preferred his happiness over her own interests.[51][52] She's seemingly seeking to make him a better person and bring him out of his shell, particularly focusing on his art skills in a "stern teacher" kind of way.

She has a habit to pose quite often with her arms crossed to convey her authority and demeanor, and also to support her large chest.

Trivia

  • The character is usually referenced only by her title, however, when she showed the disbandment form to Senpai, two kanji of her last name were clearly visible, while the third was partially covered with a balloon,[53] implying her full surname could have been something like Sunomata (須ノ又), Sunokawa (須ノ川) or Sunomiya (須ノ宮), which is later revealed to be the case in Chapter 83.[54][55]
    • Sunomiya (須ノ宮) is a very rare surname composed by the kanji for "ought, by all means, necessarily" (, su) and "temple, shrine, palace" (, miya), divided by the katakana syllable (, no), thus being literally translatable "tempe of necessarily".
      • Due to her home being placed close to the shrine according to the official town map,[56] her surname may also be a reference to the existing Sunomiya Shrine in Hayama, the city in which the manga is set.
      • In the official English translation the surname "Sunomiya" was further suggested, as an 'M' was visible in the aforementioned panel so that the letters "Sunom-" were visible.
    • Her first name was revealed in Chapter 84 to be "Sana" (さな, Sana), as her younger cousin respectfully called her "Sana nee-san" (さな姉さん, Sana nēsan).
  • The knot tie that the President wears with her uniform is identical to the one Gamo-chan wore in Chapter 1, which was never seen again afterward.
  • She is the only character besides Nagatoro to have been featured on a manga cover, as she appears on the second variant of Volume 6.
  • After being humiliated and forcibly paraded throughout the school wearing a skimpy bunny suit by Nagatoro and her friends, they start to associate her with a rabbit, even calling her "Bunny-Girl".
    • To strengthen this association, is the fact that she started to wear said outfit willingly[57] also, she naturally has crimson irises, which is usually a common bunny eye color.[10][11]
    • Ironically her biker helmet sports a pair of bunny ears.[58]
  • According to her character profile in the Official Fanbook her favourite food is Yukon Gold potato while she really hates junk food.
  • Due to being the only character featured in Side Story 10, she's the first character to have ever appeared in a chapter of some sort without Nagatoro and Senpai.
  • The President's official measurements are: 108-62-94.[1]
  • Being born on June 19, the President is eleven months older than Senpai, as well as the oldest of all the main characters. Since the Japanese school year is from April to March, and third-year students are required to be 17 years old at the start of classes, she was 17 when the school year began but soon turned 18. In Senpai's flashback of the previous year's school festival in Chapter 37, she was already 17 (as a second-year) due to it being set long after summer break which is from July to August. When she appears to him in person again, also in Chapter 37, she was already 18 since it was again around the time of the school festival, after summer break.[1][59]
    • When the next school year began in Chapter 82 and she began her first year in university, she was thus 18 and turned 19 sometime before Chapter 112, which is set in July. In Chapter 101, there is a flashback to her and Senpai during a school trip together as a third-year and second-year, before summer break and thus before they meet again in person in Chapter 37, so she may still have been 17 during the trip.
  • The President is the first and only character to have been shown in full-frontal nudity uncensored, albeit with a doll-like groin, in both the main story (Chapter 70) and the Bonus chapters (17). Previously, Nagatoro, Gamo-chan, and Yoshi had been all shown naked in Chapter 33 but their private parts were all censored.
    • Later in Bonus 26, Shikki have been shown similarly uncensored, albeit only her top was visible while her groin being out of the framing.
  • The President is often described by fans as an exhibitionist, in part due to many of Nanashi's pre-serialization erotic works having similar themes. But this may not be accurate in her case and she may be better described as a nudist, who simply likes to be naked and chooses to do it in public since exhibitionism formally refers to a sexual kink where people gain pleasure from exposing themselves or doing sexual acts in public, and the President's stoic manner makes her actions feel largely asexual and it's thus hard to read her intentions towards others when she does it, though Nagatoro does call her "horny".
    • For instance, while streaking is a classic prank or activity done for sexual thrills, she doesn't seem to account for other people possibly seeing her when going naked in the woods or at school after hours.
    • The closest she has come to acknowledging this is in the Official Fanbook, where in response to a question asking "why are you like that?", she exhibits confusion about what the question means but in the end mentions her "libido".
  • Compared to the other supporting characters, the President is less present in the manga chapters, however, since her first appearance she has been featured or was even the protagonist of at least one Bonus Chapter or a comic strip in each volume.
  • The color with whom she’s associated on her profile page on the anime official website is red.
  • She drives a sidecar,[60] a black Ural Gear Up with custom mirrors.
  • She's a fan of Tarō Okamoto.[61]
  • As revealed in a bonus strip for Volume 12 set during Chapter 92, she has breakfast every morning in the nude together with her cousin Hana, who does it in her underwear; implying they sleep in the aforementioned attires.
  • Her character song is "Hymn to Love".
  • Due to Bonus 24 and 25 as well as Chapter 135 being titled after a line spoken by her, she is the eighth character after Nagatoro, Gamo-chan, the protagonist's sister, Sunomiya, Senpai, Shikki and Sakura to ever name a chapter; the ninth being Yoshi.
